Cryogenic Deflashing Helps FKM Gaskets Remove Flash: A High-Efficiency Answer to the Pain Points of Manual Trimmi

Recently, a batch of small FKM (fluorine rubber) gaskets was cryogenically deflashed at STMC, and the before-and-after results speak for themselves: before treatment, visible flash and burrs clung to the edges with irregular contours; after treatment, both the outer rim and inner bore of the gaskets are smooth and round, with significantly improved dimensional consistency.

In rubber sealing parts manufacturing, flash removal on small gaskets, O-rings and other complex-shaped components has long been a challenge. Traditional manual trimming relies on handwork. With tiny parts and complex geometries, the force and angle of the cutting tool are hard to control consistently, often leaving residual flash or over-trimming the part itself. Both accuracy and efficiency are limited, and labor costs keep rising as batch volumes grow.

Cryogenic deflashing offers another path. The process leverages the embrittlement behavior of rubber at low temperatures: after the parts are cooled to a set temperature, media impingement causes the flash to crack off, while the product body remains tough and undamaged. Compared with trimming one piece at a time by hand, this method handles parts in bulk, removes edges more uniformly, and delivers better consistency from piece to piece.

On-site observation shows that, after cryogenic deflashing, the FKM gaskets have clean, regular outer and inner edges with no obvious residual flash, while the original surface material state is preserved. FKM is valued for its heat, oil and media resistance and is widely used in sealing and protective applications; its appearance and dimensional accuracy directly affect assembly fit and sealing reliability.

Cryogenic deflashing is not simply a replacement for manual work. Rather, it turns a process that depends on “hand feel” into a repeatable, high-volume step—bringing practical benefits to delivery efficiency and quality stability for small and medium batches of rubber parts.
